Collaboration on St. Croix Fish Passage Projects May Create Largest Alewife Run in North America
WASHINGTON, Sept. 19 -- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued the following news: An 1874 map hanging in the Calais, Maine, library depicts the St. Croix, or Skutik, River flowing past the town. A spot on the river called Salmon Falls marks the location of a tribal fishing village. In 1881, the Milltown Dam was built across the river near the same site. The village--and the sea-run fish that sustained members of the Passamaquoddy People for thousands of years--disappeared.   more

AUGUSTA, Maine, Sept. 17 -- The Natural Resources Council of Maine issued the following news release on Sept. 16, 2024: The federal government today issued its final sale notice for the responsible development of offshore wind in the Gulf of Maine. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) notice sets October 29th as the date for its auction of lease areas for building floating offshore wind projects to potential developers.
